Can marbles kill?

They can – if fired from a powerful slingshot.

Marbles are often used as alternative slingshot ammo. In this regard, The Slingshot Channel tests two very common myths:

- Can marbles penetrate flesh?
- Will marbles shatter when they hit a hard surface?

These myths are checked out, using ballistic gelatin and a solid wall. See the harmless looking glass balls tearing the gelatin into shreds, and see how they chip stone shards from a massive rock…

The message is clear: Marbles are about as dangerous as steel balls when fired from a powerful slingshot.

“Invisible” Weapons vs. Ballistic Gelatin

“Invisible” here means: Weapons that can’t be detected with a metal detector, used in airports and government buildings. How dangerous are non metal weapons, really? This video wants to find out.

Airport security is still much more tight than before 9-11. But is it tight enough? Mohammed Atta and his fellow terrorists used box cutters to hijack the planes. Those can’t be brought aboard airplanes anymore, the detectors are (hopefully) too sensitive. But there are still many weapons that

a) are small enough to fit in a pocket without too much bulging
b) won’t be seen by a metal detector

Jörg Sprave tests four non metal knifes (flint, wood, plastic, and ceramics) against a block of ballistic gelatin, “Mythbusters” style. Then, a carbon fibre slingshot is used to fire pebbles into the gelatin.

The end result is clear: More security is needed. All of the tested weapons can seriously harm, even kill, a human beeing. Therefore suitable body scanners and mandatory frisking is a must.

As a bonus, steel and lead balls are also shot at the gelatin, and a samurai sword finishes it off.

The Slingshot Crossbow Tutorials brought to you here are very popular and many people reported that they made fine weapons by following the how-tos. But the designs always showed rather long weapons. It is time to bring the ball shooting sling-x-bow to the next level:

A Bullpup frame with roller based draw length extension.

This allows a very short weapon (just over two feet in total length), but a lot of power and accuracy at the same time.

This video shows the functional, but unfinished weapon – it needs more sanding, a cool paint job, stronger bands and also a scope. All this will come up next week, including a detailled how-to video with blueprints!

Huge Slingshot Cannon in Action

On December 30th, 2010, The Slingshot Channel presented a functional “desktop size” slingshot cannon. It fires 8 mm steel balls.

Finally, the model was turned into reality! 10 times bigger than the model, it fires 80 mm steel balls now… with impressive force.

The huge amount of rubber (12 full Thera Band Gold stripes per side, 18 times stronger than “hunterbands” for conventional slingshots) propels a steel boule/petanque ball fast enough so it flies 200 meters (220 yards).

See how it smashes beer barrels and even a car… lots of slow motion is included.

The winch allows insane draw weights. Here, more than 200 kg was employed. In combination with the “barrel length” of 3 meters (10 ft), it achieves firearm like energy levels and the momentum of a giant sledge hammer.

This may be the strongest rubber based weapon presented on youtube ever.!

Rufus Hussey on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (1986)

I just found a classic video of ol’ Rufus Hussey talking with Johnny Carson. Great stuff!

Video: The Slingshot Man

The Sling Shot Man

Rufus Hussey, also known as “the slingshot man,” or as he would say “the beanshooter man.” No matter what you call him, Rufus was without a doubt a top marksman and master slingshot maker. He even appeared on the Johny Carson show. Rufus passed away in 1994.

Homemade Slingshots

Some people still make old fashioned homemade style slingshots, like the famous Rufus Hussey.
Rufus Hussey was known as “the bean shooter man” because of his expert marksmanship. Rufus could hit a June-bug off a leaf from a considerable distance.

He started making and shooting slingshot when he was a kid growing up during the great depression out of necessity, and later went on to make them for fun. Rufus passed away back in 1994 after more than 50 years of slingshot mastership.

Still other people who make wrist rockets may carve beautifully engravings in the stocks and will also use exotic woods. They can become quite fancy.

Today’s modern wrist rocket manufactures use the very best rubber and leather pouches making these more than just toys, but rather highly tuned weapons that are fun to own and shoot.

The Beanshooter Slingshot Man

The 65 year old Rufus Hussey is without a doubt the most awesome slingshot shooter in the land. Born and raised in North Carolina on a farm, Rufus learned his slingshot skills out of necessity.  He had to use his slingshot for hunting rabbit because his older brother was the one who got to use the shotgun.

Rufus appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and was interviewed by Charles Kuralt.

Rufus Hussey… The Beanshooter Man Passed Away In 1994

In 1972 Rufus decided to start making beanshooters to sell or give away in order to promote what he felt was becoming a lost art. He gave each its own serial number which he recorded on the butt-end of the handle. Rufus passed away in Feb. of 1994. The last beanshooter he had completed carried the number 15,864. Now that's a lot of walking the woods searching for Dogwood forks.

In his later years Rufus became quite famous shooting his beanshooter to the amazement of country and city-folk alike. He appeared on many TV shows where he demonstrated his skill. One TV host asked… “Rufus, I understand you can knock a quarter out of the air with that thing! Is that right?” Rufus responded… “I can hit a penny…. but when it gets that cheap, it’s time to quit!”
