Slingshot Bands Demystified!

This video is aimed at slingshot enthusiasts only!

The whole community always wondered why and how tapered bands are faster and more powerful. Lots of theories and guesses, but no data.

This changed when Destin came to Germany, with his great professional grade super high speed cam in tow!

Finally, at last, reliable data.

You MUST subscribe to Destin. Destin’s channel can be found at

http://www.youtube.com/user/destinws2

Anyway, this video demystifies tapered bands. The hi speed video allows accurate acceleration graphs, and side by side comparisons.

Dan, aka ZDP189, has much more calculations on his blog

http://tinyurl.com/blqwmvh ), I recommend reading it!

For those of you who want to make your own slingshot, I have written and published a pdf manual, plus a band size calculator. Here:

HiSpeed in HD: Slingshot Cannon Spectacular

For the first time, The Slingshot Channel features a guest star from the US! That’s right, Destin from Huntsville/Alabama came over. Destin runs an excellent and very successful youtube channel, called “Get Smarter Every Day”.

Destin brought a great camera – a “Phantom”, made by the US company Vision Research.

A 1082 frames per second at 1280×720 resolution (HD)! We don’t really know how much this beauty costs – but we are sure it is worth every penny.

It cleared up right on time, and we did many great shots… smashing particle boards… smashing pumpkins… smashing three pumpkins in a row with the big cannon…

The outcome is very spectacular. See for yourself!

Blood, Pain, and Slingshots

Well, in all these years a few accidents happened, mostly when there is distraction and/or not enough caution. This weekend, Jörg Sprave, frontman of The Slingshot Channel, hit his hand while clocking the speed of the recent Zombie Rooftop Slingshot.

Luckily, the shot was deflected and it was not fully accelerated when it hit the hand, but there was a lot of blood and good, honest pain.

So no shooting today! But we are no pussies here at the Slingshot Channel, and therefore three new slingshots are presented in this video – there still was enough daylight when the “crew” came back from the hospital.

Halloween Special #3: Zombie Rooftop Slingshot

Halloween approaches quickly, and it is again time for the long awaited Special, presented to you by The Slingshot Channel.

This time, a specifically designed monster slingshot is tested against a 40mm (1,57″) particle board. Even a carpenter’s hammer, brought down with full force, can not punch a hole in this thick piece of wood.

Regular slingshots have no chance against the board – not even a Hand Howitzer shot in full butterfly.

But the RTZAS (Roof Top Zombie Annihilation Slingshot) gives you 3,70 meters draw length – more than 11 ft. This is enough to punch a huge hole into the board, with an enormous exit funnel! The wepaon is no doubts more than strong enough to smash a Zombie skull.

The video also shows the aiming procedure and the accuracy of the weapon.

This may be the strongest portable hand operated slingshot ever built!

Can marbles kill?

They can – if fired from a powerful slingshot.

Marbles are often used as alternative slingshot ammo. In this regard, The Slingshot Channel tests two very common myths:

- Can marbles penetrate flesh?
- Will marbles shatter when they hit a hard surface?

These myths are checked out, using ballistic gelatin and a solid wall. See the harmless looking glass balls tearing the gelatin into shreds, and see how they chip stone shards from a massive rock…

The message is clear: Marbles are about as dangerous as steel balls when fired from a powerful slingshot.

How to Make a Small Crossbow out of Household Items

How to Make a Small Crossbow out of Household Items

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Right now, you can probably build your very own mini crossbow without getting up from your desk. No knives, wood, electric appliances or any other expensive equipment are needed. All you need are some basic office supplies, ten minutes, and these instructions.

Steps

  1. Line up two of the pencils parallel to each other and secure them with tape, leaving at least a centimeter untaped at both ends in order to leave a space for the rubber band later. Repeat for the other two pencils.
  2. Create a cross that looks like a lowercase “t” with the two pairs of pencils. Secure them in that position with either tape (Duct tape works best), rubber bands, or glue.
  3. Take off the tip of a cheap or useless pen. Unscrew the other side of the pen, and then take out all of the inner mechanisms. (Save the ink cartridge because that will be used as the ammo later.) After doing that, you should end up with a hollow tube.
  4. Secure the tube to the vertical side of the cross with tape.
  5. Stretch a rubber band horizontally across the crossbow, anchoring it between the two pencils and going over the pen in the middle.
  6. Wrap a piece of tape around the middle of the rubber band where it passes over the pen.
  7. Tie a rubber band between the pencils and the bottom of the hollow pen. This is to add elevation, which will come in handy later.
  8. Put the ink cartridge back into the tube so that it’s sticking out slightly.
  9. Stretch the rubber-band to the end of the tube.
  10. Grab the ink cartridge, pull it back further with the rubber band, and let go.
  11. When done use the top and bottom of the pen for a cap. Hope you have fun shooting.

Tips

  • Try experimenting with different types of bolts (the “arrows” used by your crossbow). Some bolts might work better than others, due to their size, shape or weight.
  • The bow isn’t very good at long distance shooting, so if you want to pierce something, shoot it from very close up.
  • Use a bendable ruler for the base. It will give a little more flexibility, offering more power when the projectile is released.
  • Use a binder clip as a trigger.
  • It works much better when put more than one layer of tape around the launching rubber band.
  • If you use those rubber band like hair restrainers you get much more power and distance.
  • Also, some Silly-bands can give you more distance

Warnings

  • Do not aim this at people or animals, even as a joke. Accidentally letting go of the rubber band from something as simple as someone bumping into you might cause a serious injury.
  • If made poorly, the crossbow won’t work well and will be hard to handle.
  • Do not look into the end of the crossbow while loaded. Use common sense.
  • (please note), the video above is the same idea and similar process but has a few changes.
  • Do NOT take this to school (unless you want to get expelled)

Things You’ll Need

  • 1 pen
  • 4 pencils
  • 2-4 rubber bands
  • Tape
